Finishing a test with a nice barbecue in the buga

Today I had a test in discrete structures (lots of math … graphs, recursion, induction) which I asumed to be the hardest I had to take this semester. So after finishing the four pages of handwritten notes we were allowed to take with us (no calculator, no nothing but the pages) and having lunch I took the test.

It was ok. I could have done better, as I made some really stupid mistakes which I could not correct due to the two hour time constraint.

Afterwards I tried to get some more things done but was relieved when the decision was made to have a barbecue at the buga in Kassel.

I’ll post some photos as soon as I get my hands on it.

When I came home the test results were already online. 15 of 31 participants did not pass. I managed a 3.3 which is okay since it won’t go into the final calculations for my diploma grade.

GOCollab should read papers … or just use obby

Some time ago I was fascinated by SubEthaEdit and read up on the theory behind it. I could not find out whether gobby/obby is an implementation of this paper, or if it is another idea. Today, I stumbled upon GOCollab which realizes collaborative editing in gnumeric and AbiWord, however they obviously did not read the paper, as they are having problems keeping the documents in sync (Such conflicts are unavoidable because software is not yet able to tell what its users really want – thats not true, go read the paper…).

Maybe obby could help them out a bit 😉

Crappy Linux Laptop/Dual Head and autodetection support

Another example for how much the current configuration of x.org sucks. Why does it have to be so hard?!?! Would it not be possible to just reinitialize the graphics card?

Furthermore, why can’t I tell X.org about my german keyboard and mouse (it has a wheel + extra buttons) and let it autodetect all other settings? X.org only tries to autodetect settings when the /etc/xorg.conf is missing completely. Let’s see what comes out of the bug I entered.

Next thing that bugs me is that I dont have a clue on how to change the resolution of the second display on the fly. Xorgs ati/radeon driver allows me to predefine resolutions in the form of 1400×1050-1280×1024 which is nearly what I want (with this I still have to predefine what I want …). It is still impossible to change between clone mode and LeftOf / RightOf/… on the fly – even less with the key reserved for that on every laptop …

Annoying bugs are …

those which take you four hours to find them and 1 minute to fix them (remembering this post). Today I was searching the web for information on how to configure a simple boot menu with PXELinux. Our setup was woking nice when we had only one entry for the diskless Gentoo installation in the config file. When trying to add a menu the machine would enlessly reboot whenever loading the menu.c32. Maybe we should not have mixed up the older pxelinux.0 of the Suse server with a recent gentoo menu.c32… duh …

Where is the admin interface for Open-Xchange?

SLOX had an administration interface for OX, however the open source version is lacking one. The /umin servlet only allows to change the personal settings and searching through the official forums I only found ATFrogs. Unfortunately it does not have support for adding / editing users … o_O

hmm seems like there is no good solution …

Ooops

Your beliefs most closely resemble those of Satanism! Before you scream, do a bit of research on it. To be a Satanist, you don’t actually have to believe in Satan. Satanism generally focuses upon the spiritual advancement of the self, rather than upon submission to a deity or a set of moral codes. Do some research if you immediately think of the satanic cult stereotype. Your beliefs may also resemble those of earth-based religions such as paganism.
